What we do
IPPF contributes to shaping penal and penitentiary systems in various ways.
The International Penal and Penitentiary Foundation (IPPF) is an international organization based in Berne Switzerland. Its roots go back over 150 years, to the establishment of the International Prison Commission (IPC) in 1872, which was tasked with collecting prison statistics and recommending reforms. The IPC, which organized several international congresses, became the International Penal and Penitentiary Commission (IPPC) in 1929. In 1951, after the dissolution of the IPPC, its functions were transferred to the United Nations, and the IPPF was established as foundation under Swiss law.
The IPPF is a unique institution that has played a vital role in the field of crime prevention and the treatment of offenders, particularly through its contribution to scientific research, publications, and education. Its members come from all across the globe and represent academia, the judiciary, and prison administration.
